Artist Spotlight: Crooked I

Around the age of seventeen, Crooked I started an independent record company called Muscle Records with two professional football players, also from Long Beach, Chucky Miller and Leonard Russell. It's not known how many songs were recorded, and the music recorded during this period still remains unreleased to this day. This is when he caught the attention of Noo Trybe/Virgin Records, and landed his first record deal in 1995.[3]
Crooked I originally got his start appearing on compilations released by Big C-Style's record label, 19th Street Records, such as 19th Street LBC Compilation and Straight Outta Cali. He also appeared on the soundtracks to movies such as Ride and Caught Up, where he collaborated with Snoop Doggy Dogg, Tha Eastsidaz, and The Luniz. At the time, Crooked I was still signed under Noo Trybe/Virgin Records, who handled distribution for 19th Street Records. Business was going good, but for unknown reasons, Virgin Records decided to get rid of their urban division, otherwise known as Noo Trybe, and Crooked I was out of a record deal.[3]
Wickliffe was later contacted by Big C-Style and Daz Dillinger to form DPG Records, which was originally going to be a sub-label under Death Row Records at the time. Crooked was going to be 20% owner of the label, and the first act released as well.[4] Daz left Death Row Records to run DPG Records independently, but rather than go with Daz, Crooked was trying to figure out his options.
Crooked I also had talks of signing to Dr. Dre's Aftermath imprint, but Dre wanted to release Chronic 2001 and Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP before releasing Crooked.[5] He also had talks with other major record labels who wanted to sign him, but they too were waiting for Dr. Dre's Chronic 2001 album to be released before they would consider signing another West Coast MC.[6] It was around this time that Crooked I re-negotiated the original deal he had with DPG Records/Death Row Records as a solo artist deal with just Death Row Records.

Crooked I, along with DJ Felli Fel and DJ Nik Bean, released St. Valentine's Day Bossacre on February 14th, 2008. Although it's called a mixtape, it consists of all new tracks by Crooked I, much like Young Boss Vol. 2, and boasts guest appearances by Royce Da 5'9", and Roscoe Umali, with production from DJ Felli Fel, Rick Rock, Komplex, and MG. The February 2008 issue of Ozone West reviewed St. Valentine's Day Bossacre and rated it 4 slaps out of 5.[22]
Two more mixtapes were released in 2008 by Crooked I, The Block Obama: Hood Politics[23] and Block Obama II[24]. The Block Obama was originally going to be hosted by DJ Whoo Kid and DJ Strong, but ended up being released un-tagged without a DJ, and for free download on the internet[25]. Block Obama II was released on the day of the 2008 Presidential election, this time for sale on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Napster, and other online retailers[26]. Block Obama II also boasts guest appearances from Dynasty Entertainment artists Horseshoe G.A.N.G. and Sauce The Boss, in addition to Knoc-turn'al and production by Jim Gettum, Komplex, and Rick Rock[27].
Crooked I's debut album, B.O.S.S. (Beginning of Something Serious) is intended for release sometime in 2009, but no release date is set. The album was originally intended to be released in stores, but Crooked later announced the album will be a free internet download.[28]
Recently, Crooked I teamed up with MC's Royce Da 5'9", Joell Ortiz and Joe Budden and formed a group under the name Slaughterhouse.

Artist spotlight: The Cool Kids

The members of The Cool Kids met in 2005 when Reed found a beat on MySpace that Ingersoll had produced.[1] The two met to discuss terms of the beat's sale, and eventually ended up recording for two hours.[2] They were inspired by golden age hip hop and artists like Eric B. & Rakim.[3] Ingersoll began promoting the new duo's material, and it was eventually booked by Josh Young of Flosstradamus for a DJ performance.[2] At this performance (in a venue called Town Hall Pub), the duo met the DJ Diplo who offered to release a mixtape of their unreleased tracks titled Totally Flossed Out on his label Mad Decent, though it was eventually released on C.A.K.E. Recordings.[4] They also received an offer from the DJ A-Trak to sign to his Fool's Gold label,[4] which they did, but only for one single.[5] Of their time with Fool's Gold, the Cool Kids felt they weren’t getting enough attention: “When your boss is on tour with Kanye West, it’s easy to have timelines missed,” said Chuck in an interview. [6]

Until recently, all material had been released solely on the band's MySpace page[3]—their recording contract came after performances at the CMJ Music Festival and Pitchfork Music Festival, on July 15, 2007.[1][7] Eventually, The Cool Kids signed to Chocolate Industries, another independent label.[5] The group has revealed on its MySpace page that The Cool Kids' debut album, When Fish Ride Bicycles, will be released in 2008.[8] Ingersoll has been the producer for tracks released thus far,[9] but both work in rapping and production.[10] The duo uses music software program Reason from Propellerhead Software to produce their music.[11]

They have been on tour, opening for M.I.A.[12] and they will be also joining the bill of the 2008 Rock the Bells hip hop festival on select dates.[13] The group toured across Australia in February 2008 and also appeared at the Laneway Festival.[14] One of the duo's singles, "Black Mags", was featured in a late 2007 Rhapsody TV commercial, along with Sara Bareilles.[15] In the same year, the group collaborated with Lil Wayne and DJ Benzi through the Internet on a track entitled "Gettin' It", which will reportedly appear on the DJ's future album Get Right.[16]

The Cool Kids have been featured in the video games NBA Live 08 and MLB 2K8 with the song "88",[17] and in the episode "The First Cut Is the Deepest" from HBO's TV series Entourage with the song "Mikey Rocks".[18] They were listed in Rolling Stone's Ten Artists to Watch in 2008.[19] According to Rolling Stone, "since "Black Mags" debuted, the Cool Kids have gone from an underground sensation in their native Chicago to the hottest ticket at New York's CMJ festival." [20]

The duo have been endorsed by Mountain Dew for their new single, "Delivery Man", to which commercials and the music video have aired on MTV2. The group's song "Bassment Party" was featured in the September 21, 2008 episode of the HBO hit comedy Entourage. They also recorded an original track, "2K Pennies," for the soundtrack of NBA 2K9. However, The Cool Kids have said in an interview that their success has been gradual. [21] They will also be headlining the "NBA 2K Bounce Tour" along with Q-Tip.[22]

Hip hop hasn’t evolved drastically in some time, and with all the new comers making catchy and infectious records for a quick ring tone sell, there’s a lack of creativity in hip hop and the focus is more about how many units can be sold. Every generation a few new artist’s come forth with something to set a pace for a whole new sound and vibe–this time around, the midwest delivers another innovative artist to break down barriers and set trends.
K.i.D CuDi’s music can only be described as the next level of music in our generation and for generations to come. Cudi (originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but spent the last 3 years living in Brooklyn) fuses alternative rock, hip hop and occasionally R & B, to form feel good and emotionally conscious records. His content is filled with witty explanations about himself and his lifes journeys, with a twist of story telling scenerios.His first single “Day N Nite” is nothing more than a conscious awareness record about his faults and how he deals with them. “I’m sure everyone has been in at least one or two of the scenerios I mentioned in “Day N Night”. It was a record designed to let the people out there know—hey, we all have issues. But there’s ways to get through and there’s always a brighter day ahead filled with answers to the toughest situations; we all get lonely sometimes, its life.” With every record, especially “Day N Nite”, CuDi vows to put his heart into each record, so after hearing each song you can feel like you actually know him. “People like records they can relate to, even if you can’t relate to something I speak about, you’ll at least understand my mind, I won’t lose anyone. Even if they haven’t walked in my shoes, they’ll feel me for me.”
